Choosing a Business Valuation Specialist

Before hiring a business appraiser, ask at least three questions.

  1. Does the appraiser hold a business valuation designation? Not all valuation credentials are created equal.

    • The ASA designation requires 10,000 hours of valuation experience, completion of exams, and peer review of an appraiser's work product.
    • The ABV designation requires the CPA designation, completion of an exam, and involvement in 6 valuation projects.
    • The CVA designation requires the CPA designation, completion of an exam, and a case study.

  2. Does the appraiser work full-time in business valuation?

    • Valuing a business is more than plugging numbers into a financial model. Dedication is required to learn the “craft” of valuation – the assumptions and risks that drive value.

  3. Does the appraiser have experience with similar projects?

    • Prior experience with your industry and project type may give an appraiser a head start in analyzing your business and defining the appropriate scope of work.
